5 Ways to Lower Your Winter Heating Bill in Central Texas

Winters in Central Texas are mild compared to most of the country, but a run of cold mornings and chilly fronts can still send your heating bill climbing if your HVAC system is working harder than it has to. The good news is that most of the savings available to Waco homeowners don't require a system replacement, just a few smart adjustments. Here are five ways to keep your home comfortable this winter without paying more than you need to.

1. Dial in your thermostat settings

Every degree you lower your thermostat in winter can trim your heating costs. Setting it to around 68 degrees while you're home, and a few degrees lower overnight or while you're away, is a simple way to save without feeling a difference in comfort. A smart or programmable thermostat makes this effortless, automatically adjusting on a schedule so you're never paying to heat an empty house.

2. Seal the gaps that let warm air escape

Gaps around windows, doors, and attic access points let conditioned air slip out and cold air seep in, forcing your furnace or heat pump to run longer than necessary. Weatherstripping, caulk, and door sweeps are inexpensive fixes that can noticeably cut how often your system cycles on.

3. Change your air filter

A clogged filter restricts airflow, making your system work harder to push heated air through your home. That extra strain shows up directly on your energy bill. Checking your filter monthly and replacing it every 60 to 90 days, more often if you have pets, keeps your system running efficiently all season.

4. Make sure your ductwork isn't working against you

Leaky or poorly insulated ducts can lose a significant amount of heated air before it ever reaches your vents, especially in attic runs that see big temperature swings. If certain rooms always feel colder than others, or your system seems to run constantly without keeping up, duct leaks are a common culprit worth having checked.

5. Schedule a heating system tune-up

A furnace or heat pump that hasn't been serviced recently loses efficiency gradually, often without any obvious warning signs. A professional tune-up cleans components, checks refrigerant or combustion levels, and catches small issues before they turn into bigger repairs or higher bills. It's one of the most reliable ways to make sure your system is running at its best when you need it most.

None of these changes require a major investment, but together they can make a real difference in how much you spend staying warm this winter. If it's been a while since your heating system had a professional look, now is a good time, before the coldest stretch of the season arrives.
